Allergen Profile, Mini Profile

The Allergen Profile, Mini Profile is a targeted serum immunoassay panel that measures allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against a curated subset of common environmental and/or food allergens. It is used to identify sensitization to specific allergens and supports the clinical diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergic conditions. This panel is particularly useful as an initial screening tool when a broad allergen workup is not yet warranted. IgE-mediated sensitization occurs when the immune system produces allergen-specific IgE antibodies following exposure to a foreign protein, which then bind to high-affinity receptors on mast cells and basophils. Upon re-exposure to the allergen, cross-linking of bound IgE triggers degranulation and release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other mediators responsible for allergic symptoms. Circulating allergen-specific IgE levels reflect the degree of immunological sensitization, though sensitization does not always equate to clinical allergy.

What this test reveals

expand_more

This test checks whether your immune system has made allergy antibodies (IgE) against a small group of common allergens, helping your doctor identify what may be causing your allergic symptoms. A positive result means your immune system has reacted to that allergen, but your doctor will use this alongside your symptoms and history to decide if it is truly causing your problems.

What abnormal values may indicate

expand_more

When elevated: Elevated allergen-specific IgE levels indicate immunological sensitization and, when correlated with a consistent clinical history, support a diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergic disease such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis. Higher IgE class levels (Class 3–6, >3.5 kUA/L) are generally associated with greater likelihood of clinical reactivity, though the relationship is not strictly linear. Persistently elevated levels may guide decisions regarding allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, or allergen immunotherapy referral. When low: Low or undetectable allergen-specific IgE to the tested allergens makes IgE-mediated allergy to those specific allergens unlikely, which can help narrow the differential diagnosis and reduce unnecessary dietary restrictions or environmental avoidance measures. However, a negative panel does not exclude non-IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, contact dermatitis) or allergy to allergens not included in the mini panel. Clinical correlation remains essential before concluding that allergy is absent.

exercise

For athletes

expand_more

Allergen sensitization can trigger exercise-induced anaphylaxis or worsen exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, potentially limiting training intensity and recovery. Identifying specific allergen triggers helps athletes optimize training environments and manage symptoms that might otherwise impair performance or require activity modification.
