Fibrinogen is a protein your liver makes that helps blood clot when you bleed. This test measures how well fibrinogen works in your blood, which is important for both stopping bleeding and understanding clotting risk.

When elevated: Elevated fibrinogen activity may indicate increased clotting tendency, which can raise the risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. It can also reflect inflammation, infection, or stress on the body. When low: Low fibrinogen activity suggests your blood may not clot as effectively, increasing the risk of excessive bleeding or bruising. This can occur with liver disease, severe infections, or certain inherited clotting disorders.

Fibrinogen activity is moderately relevant to athletes, as elevated levels may indicate systemic inflammation from heavy training load or inadequate recovery, potentially affecting clotting balance and cardiovascular stress. It's not a primary performance metric, but chronically elevated fibrinogen can signal overtraining or poor recovery status worth monitoring alongside other markers like CRP or cortisol.
