Selenium is an essential trace mineral that supports thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune health. This test measures whole-blood selenium levels to assess nutritional status and identify deficiency, which is uncommon in developed countries but can occur with poor diet, certain medical conditions, or malabsorption.

Selenium plays a supporting role in exercise recovery through its antioxidant function (as part of glutathione peroxidase), but deficiency is rare in athletes eating adequate protein and whole foods. Testing is most useful for those with restricted diets, GI issues, or unexplained fatigue; routine screening is not necessary for well-nourished athletes.
