D-Dimer

D-Dimer measures a protein fragment released when blood clots form and then break down. It's ordered to screen for abnormal clotting conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)—situations where clot formation and breakdown are happening at elevated rates.

When elevated: An elevated D-dimer suggests active blood clot formation or breakdown somewhere in the body. However, it is not specific to clotting disorders—it can also rise with infection, inflammation, cancer, pregnancy, and recent surgery. When low: A low or normal D-dimer is reassuring and helps exclude acute thrombotic events in patients with low clinical suspicion. Low levels do not indicate a clotting deficiency.

D-Dimer is not a routine performance or recovery marker for athletes. However, it may be relevant if an athlete experiences prolonged immobility (long flights, bed rest), recent surgery, or unexplained leg swelling, calf pain, or shortness of breath—all situations where clotting risk rises. Otherwise, it has minimal direct bearing on training load, adaptation, or athletic longevity.
