Thyrotropin Receptor Antibody, Serum
This test detects antibodies against the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor, which helps diagnose Graves' disease—an autoimmune condition where the immune system overstimulates the thyroid gland. It's ordered when thyroid overactivity symptoms (rapid heartbeat, heat intolerance, fatigue) are present or when thyroid function tests show elevation.
Not especially athlete-specific. However, undiagnosed Graves' disease can impair athletic performance through elevated resting heart rate, reduced exercise tolerance, and unpredictable energy crashes. Athletes with a family history of autoimmune thyroid disease or persistent unexplained fatigue despite adequate recovery may benefit from screening, as thyroid dysfunction affects metabolism and cardiovascular stability during training.
